I have this one message, and it's bipartisan and
it's nonpartisan and it's just about hope. This is about giving hope a chance.
-Michael J. Fox, November 2006 |

| The subject of stem cell research has become a topic
of great debate in our country. It has become an issue in election campaigns and political
advertisements. People argue over the merits of adult stem cell research versus embryonic
stem cell research. Religious and ethical arguments have been made both for and against
this type of medical research. Yet the decisions that we as a society make about whether
and how to pursue stem cell research will have profound consequences, not only for the
millions of Americans and their loved ones who struggle every day with debilitating
diseases and chronic disabilities, but also for the way in which future medical advances
are scrutinized and funded. |
| |
| Wisconsin Stem Cell Now, Inc. was founded in December
2004 in order to educate the public about the science and ethics of all forms of stem cell
research, including embryonic stem cell research. Public debate over the limits of science
is healthy. However, this debate must take place on the basis of a correct understanding
of what stem cell research entails, how the human reproduction system works, and what
leading theologians and ethicists believe are the appropriate boundaries of medical
research. It would be a tragedy if we foreclosed any avenue of medical research on the
basis of misinformation or ignorance - a tragedy for all of those whose hope for an
eventual cure would be dashed. |
| |
| The mission of Wisconsin Stem Cell Now is more
important now than ever. By speaking to church and civic groups, we explain the science
behind the headlines. By doing mass media interviews, we debunk the scare tactics and
misinformation being used to frighten the public. Finally, by meeting with legislators and
other elected officials, we ensure that policy makers have all of the information that
they need when they make decisions that affect so many lives. |
